Former Acadia president Jim Perkin passes away

Hundreds of people are expected to turn out Sunday and Monday for the visitation and funeral of former Acadia University president Jim Perkin. "I found him a very warm and friendly individual as opposed to president or vice-president," retired Acadia professor Barry Moody said Saturday.

What do you get when you combine a group of caring police officers and sheriffs, supportive local businesses and a community that wants to give? On Dec. 21, Kentville Police and local sheriff's deputies packed up their vehicles and delivered Christmas gifts, Christmas dinner and items to stock local pantries. "We collected enough to be able to help 32 families, with approximately 59 children," said deputy sheriff William Poirier.

Taylor William Reid, 24, of Forest Hill, has been handed a suspended sentence with probation for committing an assault and for unlawfully being inside a house with intent to commit an indictable offence; and has been sentenced to intermittent custody for operating a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. Reid changed his pleas to guilty on Oct. 30, 2017, and the matters were adjourned to Jan. 2 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.

Pieter Lewis Johnstone, 29, of no fixed address, has been sentenced to jail time for two counts of assault, committing mischief by willfully damaging property to a value not exceeding $5,000 and resisting a police officer engaged in the execution of his duty arresting Johnstone by using physical force. Johnstone pleaded guilty to the charges on Nov. 7, 2017.

Robert Jason Volans, 44, of Kentville, has been handed a conditional sentence with daily curfew and fined for smuggling or attempting to smuggle anabolic steroids into Canada, contrary to the Customs Act. Volans changed his plea to guilty on Jan. 31. Judge Alan Tufts handed Volans a six-month conditional sentence order with daily curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 25 hours of community service work.

David Bradley Morrison, 39, of Kingston, has had his conditional sentence terminated and will spend the remaining time in custody. Morrison was handed a six-month conditional sentence on Nov. 9, 2017, after changing his plea to guilty to a charge of possessing less than three kilograms of cannabis marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Travis Darrell Seyforth, 30, of Lake Paul, is facing several charges, including breaking and entering the Greenwood Scotiabank with intent to commit an indictable offence therein; willfully damaging the property of Scotiabank to a value not exceeding $5,000, willfully damaging RCMP property to a value not exceeding $5,000, two counts of uttering death threats to police officers and three counts of failing to comply with his recognizance. The recognizance charges relate to allegations of failing to comply with daily curfew, consuming alcohol and possessing a knife while committing a break and enter.

He has also been sentenced to time deemed served for five counts of fraud and two counts of failing to comply with his recognizance.

Michael Travis Quirk, 21, of North Alton, has been sentenced to federal custody for possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Quirk elected provincial court and pleaded guilty to the charge on May 16. Judge Catherine Benton accepted a joint sentencing recommendation from the Crown and defence and sentenced Quirk to 27 months of federal custody.

New federal party National Citizens Alliance banned from Apple Blossom parade

A new political party that says it will run candidates in the next federal election has been banned from future Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival parades after its noisy entry in Saturday's event. National Citizens Alliance founder and party leader Stephen Garvey and a couple of party supporters marched through the parade route between New Minas and Kentville with a party banner, while Garvey used a megaphone to promote the party's platform and vision.
